New Delhi [India], August 25 (ANI): Reacting to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Sunday expressed his deep shame over such crimes against women.
“It is extremely shameful that these kinds of crimes against women are occurring. What is our culture, our history? Whether it is knowledge, prosperity, or power, we have always viewed these as feminine and have revered them. Yet, we witness such heinous behaviour towards our sisters and daughters,” Khan told ANI.
“Strict laws are crucial, but even more important is creating a societal consciousness that fosters respect and honour for women… This country, its culture, and its history deserve much better treatment than this,” he added.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar claimed on Sunday that the people of West Bengal would overthrow Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and immerse her in the River Ganga due to her handling of the Kolkata rape and murder case.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar told ANI, “The government is fearful of this student movement and is attempting to suppress the people’s voice. But the student community of West Bengal has awakened… By removing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from power, the people of the state will immerse her in the River Ganga.”
He added that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would continue to protest over the incident until justice is served. “Today is the last day of our protest here, but it is not the last day of our movement; there will be more protests in the future. I will address the gathering today at around 4 PM and announce the list of further programs. The BJP will remain on the streets until justice is served,” he added.
Earlier today, the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum staged a protest in Tollygunge, demanding justice for the victim in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case and urging the Kolkata administration to take responsibility.
The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches on Sunday at multiple locations connected to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and his relatives in Kolkata, West Bengal.
On Saturday, the CBI filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr Sandip Ghosh based on directives from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation was initiated after a single bench of the High Court ordered the CBI to probe the alleged corruption at the medical college.
The Calcutta High Court has granted the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is to be presented on September 17. (ANI)
