Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], February 12 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party leader N Ramchander Rao on Wednesday slammed Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his recent summon by an Uttar Pradesh court for his alleged ‘defamatory’ remark on the Indian Army, stating that it was “not new” for Lok Sabha LoP.
The Lok Sabha LoP has been summoned by a Lucknow Court on March 24 in connection with the case.
The matter pertains to the remarks of Rahul Gandhi, wherein he said that the Chinese troops are “beating up” the Indian Army personnel at the border. This remark had drawn widespread and sharp criticism from several BJP leaders who accused him of “demoralising the army”.
Speaking to ANI, Rao explained that the summons followed a complaint filed by a retired officer from the Border Road Organisation, who took the issue with the Congress leader’s comments and emphasised that making derogatory statements about the army is not new for Rahul Gandhi.
“For making defamatory allegations and remarks against the Army, one Border Road Organisation’s retired officer has filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi for which he has been summoned. It is not new for Rahul Gandhi to make statements that are derogatory against the army,” he said.
Rao noted that the Congress leader had previously faced warnings from the Supreme Court for his controversial remarks and highlighted that while political criticism is a part of democratic debate, it is unacceptable to make false and disrespectful comments about institutions that safeguard the nation’s security, labelling it as an “anti-national” act.
“He was also warned by the Supreme Court on several occasions with regard to his remarks… He makes a statement against those organisations that work for the country and the country’s unity… Political criticism is welcome…They have every right to do it but criticising and making false and derogatory remarks on the organisations that protect our country is highly anti-national,” he added.
